Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Rallies To Beat Newberry, 3-2, In
Five Games On
Homecoming Weekend
Juniors Katie Novacek and Abby Smith both totaled a match-high 20 kills
Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne College Volleyball Team (15-12, 4-5)
rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat conference-rival Newberry (12-6, 4-5) in
five games, 3-2 (30-21, 28-30, 27-30, 30-26, 17-15), at Shuford Memorial
Gymnasium Saturday morning in South Atlantic Conference action. The match was
part of L-R’s Homecoming Weekend festivities.
Lenoir-Rhyne was led by junior middle blockers Katie Novacek (Raleigh,
N.C./Cardinal Gibbons HS) and Abby Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem HS)
with 20 kills apiece.
Both senior setter Lauren McLelland (Statesville, N.C./West Iredell
HS), who dished out a season-high 65 assists, and senior libero Catherine
Fulton (Hendersonville, N.C./Hendersonville HS), who racked up 24 digs, had
match-high performances for the Bears.
Newberry had four players in double figures in kills and was led by Fernanda
Frey (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) who tallied the only double-double for the Lady Indians
(19 kills and 11 digs).
L-R returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Belmont, N.C., for a 6:30
p.m. contest with Belmont Abbey. Newberry will face Brevard in Brevard, N.C.,
Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
