Catawba Volleyball Defeats Lenoir-Rhyne, 3-2, In A South Atlantic
Conference Match At Shuford Memorial Gymnasium Tuesday
Four Bears reach double figures for kills in the match despite the loss
Hickory, N.C. – The Catawba College Volleyball Team (21-4, 6-3)
defeated Lenoir-Rhyne (14-11, 3-5) in five games, 3-2 (30-25, 30-28, 19-30,
23-30, 15-11), Tuesday night at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
The Bears were led by junior middle blocker Katie Novacek (Raleigh,
N.C./Cardinal Gibbons HS) who tallied 20 kills for the match. Sophomore outside
hitter Kassi Henry (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln HS), freshman middle
blocker Caroline Albertelli (Plantation, Fla./Chaminade Madonna Prep) and
junior middle blocker Abby Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem HS) had 19,
18 and 14 kills, respectively, for L-R.
Racking up Lenoir-Rhyne’s only double-double for the match was senior setter
Lauren McLelland (Statesville, N.C./West Iredell HS) with a season-high
60 assists and 22 digs.
For the Catawba Indians, Melissa Powers (Bennett, N.C.) totaled a match-high
21 kills, while Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, Va.), Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory,
N.C.) and Andi Henderson (Swansboro, N.C.) all notched double-doubles.
Griffith had 14 kills and 17 digs, Lo tallied 13 kills and 13 digs and Henderson
raked in 50 assists and 15 digs.
Lenoir-Rhyne next takes the court on Friday when it travels to Brevard, N.C.,
to take on Brevard College. The match is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
