Catawba Women’s Tennis Edges Lenoir-Rhyne, 5-4, In South
Atlantic Conference Action
Bears see four-match win streak snapped
Salisbury, N.C. – The Catawba College Women’s Tennis Team (11-6, 2-1)
squeaked by Lenoir-Rhyne College (6-4, 2-2) by a score of 5-4 Thursday afternoon
at the Johnson Tennis Center at Catawba College.
The Lady Catawba Indians won all three doubles matches, leaving the Bears
with a 3-0 deficit to overcome. L-R was able to win four of the six singles
flights but could not manage to grab the fifth and winning point from Catawba.
Lenoir-Rhyne was led by junior Kate Meiners (Matthews, N.C./Piedmont
HS) and freshman Ashley Halvorson (Southlake, Texas/Carroll HS) as they
both tallied three-set victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
Junior Jen Binney (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach HS) won No. 3 singles
(6-3, 6-4) while sophomore Bekah Rhoney (Hickory, N.C./St. Stephens HS)
took the No. 5 singles flight (6-2, 6-2) for the Bears as well.
Catawba’s K.T. Rebadow (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) and Nikiah Knox (Stratham, N.H.)
won No. 1 doubles (8-6) to set the standard for the Lady Indians.
Lenoir-Rhyne will return home to face Carson-Newman in South Atlantic
Conference play on Sunday in a doubleheader with the men’s team. First serve for
both matches is set for 1:00 p.m.
