Bears’ fourth straight win sets a school record
Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Team (6-3) defeated
Fayetteville State (6-4), 8-1, Tuesday afternoon at the Laurie Newman Tennis
Center at Hickory High School. The win was the Bears’ fourth straight, which
sets a record for the most consecutive matches won since the sport was
reinstated in the 2004-05 season.
Lenoir-Rhyne saw sophomore Bekah Rhoney (Hickory, N.C./St. Stephens
HS) sweep No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-0) and freshman Ashley Halvorson
(Southlake, Texas/Carroll HS) win at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-2).
Juniors Jen Binney (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach HS) and Amanda
Hunsucker (Conover, N.C./Newton-Conover HS) also won at No. 3 and No. 6
singles, respectively, while sophomore Kelli Ball (Hanahan, S.C./Keller
[Texas] HS) took No. 4 singles (6-4, 6-3).
Ball teamed up with junior Kate Meiners (Matthews, N.C./Piedmont HS)
to win No. 1 doubles (8-1) while Halvorson and Binney won No. 2 doubles (8-2)
and Rhoney and Hunsucker claimed victory in No. 3 doubles (8-1).
FSU was led by Ines Nieves (Fayetteville, N.C.) who took the Lady Broncos'
only win of the day at No. 1 singles (6-2, 7-6 (4)).
Lenoir-Rhyne will return to South Atlantic Conference action on Thursday when
it travels to Salisbury, N.C., to take on Catawba at 2:30 p.m. The match will be
a doubleheader played simultaneously with the men’s team.
