Afternoon In Hickory
Three Bears go 2-0 on the day
Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne College Women’s Tennis Team (2-1)
downed Brevard College (5-1), 7-2, to hand the Tornados their first loss of the
season. The match was started at Hickory High School but was suspended due to
darkness and finished at Pebble Creek Racquet Club.
Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles segment of the match.
Junior Kate Meiners (Matthews, N.C./Piedmont HS) and sophomore Kelli
Ball (Hanahan, S.C./Keller [Texas] HS) won No. 1 doubles, 9-8 (4), while
junior Jen Binney (Cocoa Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach HS) and freshman
Ashley Halvorson (Southlake, Texas/Carroll HS) took No. 2 doubles, 8-2.
The Bears won No. 2 through No. 6 singles to make the final score 7-2. Ball
won at No. 2 singles (6-3, 7-5) and Meiners took the No. 4 matchup (6-4, 5-7,
6-0) as both players went 4-0 for the week.
The Tornados were led by Lindsay Shaeffer (Perrysburg, Ohio) as she won No. 1
singles (7-6 (4), 7-5).
L-R will return to action on Friday, March 7 when they host Slippery Rock at
10:00 a.m., while Brevard travels to Tusculum on Sunday with first serve
scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
