Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Tennis Edges Wingate, 5-4, In South
Atlantic Conference Action
Bobby McKee gets his first win as L-R Director of Tennis
Wingate, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne College Women’s Tennis Team (1-1,
1-0) rallied from a 2-1 doubles deficit to defeat Wingate University (4-5, 0-1),
5-4, Thursday evening in South Atlantic Conference action.
The Bears’ win was the first under Director of Tennis Bobby McKee and the
first conference win since the 2005 season.
L-R won the number one doubles flight, 9-7, as junior Kate Meiners
(Matthews, N.C./Piedmont) and sophomore Kelli Ball (Goose Creek,
S.C./Keller [Texas] HS) outlasted Wingate’s Hollyn Alberghini (Stanfield, N.C.)
and Shawn Kindley (Lincolnton, N.C.). The Bulldogs took the remaining two
doubles matches for a 2-1 team lead.
In singles competition, Lenoir-Rhyne won four of the six matches to claim the
5-4 victory.
Meiners and Ball both won their singles matches in straight sets, by scores
of (6-2, 6-4) and (6-0, 6-1), respectively.
Freshman Ashley Halvorson (Southlake, Texas/Carroll HS) took
Alberghini to three sets, coming through with the win (6-3, 5-7, 6-1) while
junior Amanda Hunsucker (Conover, N.C./Newton-Conover HS) sealed the team
victory with a win in tiebreaks, two sets to one (7-6, 3-6, 7-6).
Lenoir-Rhyne returns home Friday to face Brevard College at 2:00 p.m.
