Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Swimming Picks Up Two
Wins Friday Night At Salem College
The Bears defeat Salem and St. Andrews
Presbyterian while breaking eight school records
Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne
College Women’s Swimming Team (2-2, 1-1 Bluegrass Mountain Conference) picked up
two out of three dual team titles at Salem College Friday night. The two wins
were the first in school history.
L-R defeated host Salem College 134-48 and St.
Andrews Presbyterian College 105-81, while dropping the third dual match to
Guilford 110-84.
Sophomore Jessy Barriger (Taylorsville,
N.C./Alexander Central HS) set three school records in the 200-yard freestyle
(2:11.57), the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.22) and the 100-yard breaststroke
(1:18.07). Barriger now holds four individual school records and is a member of
a record-holding relay team.
Senior Nicole Ley (Cupertino, Calif./Monta
Vista HS), who just finished her final season as a goalkeeper for Lenoir-Rhyne’s
Women’s Soccer team, broke two school records of her own in the 50-yard
freestyle (:26.12) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.31).
Freshman Bethany Peris (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads
HS) finished with a time of 5:49.45 in the 500-yard freestyle, shaving 22
seconds off the all-time L-R mark.
Sophomore Mary Ellen Stephens (Greensboro,
N.C./Southeast Guilford HS) set a new standard in the 100-yard freestyle at
1:05.01.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Stephens,
Alisha Huettig (Franklin, N.C./Franklin HS), Lisa Graupner (Rock
Hill, S.C./Northwestern HS) and Shelby Ramsay (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke HS)
broke the L-R record with a time of 2:09.71.
Lenoir-Rhyne will return to the pool on Saturday
afternoon when it hosts Limestone College, also a member of the Bluegrass
Mountain Conference, in L-R’s first-ever home swim meet at 1:00 p.m.
