Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Swimming Picks Up Two Wins Friday Night At Salem College

The Bears defeat Salem and St. Andrews Presbyterian while breaking eight school records

Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne College Women’s Swimming Team (2-2, 1-1 Bluegrass Mountain Conference) picked up two out of three dual team titles at Salem College Friday night. The two wins were the first in school history.

L-R defeated host Salem College 134-48 and St. Andrews Presbyterian College 105-81, while dropping the third dual match to Guilford 110-84.

Sophomore Jessy Barriger (Taylorsville, N.C./Alexander Central HS) set three school records in the 200-yard freestyle (2:11.57), the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.22) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.07). Barriger now holds four individual school records and is a member of a record-holding relay team.

Senior Nicole Ley (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista HS), who just finished her final season as a goalkeeper for Lenoir-Rhyne’s Women’s Soccer team, broke two school records of her own in the 50-yard freestyle (:26.12) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.31).

Freshman Bethany Peris (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads HS) finished with a time of 5:49.45 in the 500-yard freestyle, shaving 22 seconds off the all-time L-R mark.

Sophomore Mary Ellen Stephens (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford HS) set a new standard in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:05.01.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Stephens, Alisha Huettig (Franklin, N.C./Franklin HS), Lisa Graupner (Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern HS) and Shelby Ramsay (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke HS) broke the L-R record with a time of 2:09.71.

Lenoir-Rhyne will return to the pool on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Limestone College, also a member of the Bluegrass Mountain Conference, in L-R’s first-ever home swim meet at 1:00 p.m.
