Round Of The 2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament
Senior Meredith O'Connor pitches a no hitter as Head Coach Shena Hollar
wins her 400th career game
Newberry, S.C. – The No. 2 Lenoir-Rhyne College Softball Team (42-10)
defeated No. 7 Newberry College (19-24) in an 8-0 rout in the first round of the
2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament at Newberry
College.
Thursday’s victory gives Head Coach Shena Hollar 400 wins for her
career. Hollar eclipsed the 350-win mark as a Bear last weekend with
Lenor-Rhyne’s SAC victory at Catawba.
After forcing the Lady Indians to leave the bases loaded in the top of the
second inning, the Bears broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the frame when
sophomore third baseman Lauren Johnson (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester HS)
scored redshirt freshman shortstop Kat Rivers (Royston, Ga./Franklin
County HS) on a single up the middle.
L-R put the game out of reach in the fourth when it scored seven runs on six
hits highlighted by a two-run triple by Rivers and a subsequent RBI double by
senior first baseman Leah Krohn (Taylorsville, N.C./Alexander Central
HS).
Senior Meredith O’Connor (Charlotte, N.C./Appalachian State Univ.)
moved to 30-7 on the year with the complete game no-hit victory for
Lenoir-Rhyne, striking out nine while Kristen Hicks (Bamberg, S.C.) suffered the
loss.
Box Score
With the win, Lenoir-Rhyne will face No. 3 Wingate on Newberry College, while
Newberry moves to the losers’ bracket to face No. 6 Catawba at Newberry High
School. Both contests are set for a 9:30 a.m. first pitch on Friday morning.
