Redshirt freshman Kat Rivers hits a two-run home run for the Bears

Hickory, N.C. – The Fairmont State University Softball Team (9-6) took advantage of a four-run first inning, defeating Lenoir-Rhyne College (22-8), 10-2, on Thursday afternoon at Bears Field.

The Fighting Falcons jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings before redshirt freshman shortstop Kat Rivers (Royston, Ga./Franklin County HS) hit a two-run home run to right centerfield to bring the score to 6-2. However, the Bears would get no closer as Fairmont State scored once in the fifth and three times in the seventh for the final 10-2 score.

The Fighting Falcons were led by Kristy Rausch (Mason, Ohio) and Sarah Zeleznikar (Burton, Ohio), who each went two-for-four with two runs scored. Rausch added a two-run home run and two RBI, accounting for both runs in the second inning.

Katie Burgess (Ravenswood, W.Va.) picked up the win for Fairmont State while L-R senior Meredith O’Connor (Charlotte, N.C./Appalachian State Univ.) (12-5) was credited with the loss.

Lenoir-Rhyne will next take the field against Lincoln Memorial on Saturday in the Bears’ 2008 South Atlantic Conference opener. The doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
