Redshirt freshman Kat Rivers hits a two-run home run for the Bears
Hickory, N.C. – The Fairmont State University Softball Team (9-6) took
advantage of a four-run first inning, defeating Lenoir-Rhyne College (22-8),
10-2, on Thursday afternoon at Bears Field.
The Fighting Falcons jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings before
redshirt freshman shortstop Kat Rivers (Royston, Ga./Franklin County HS)
hit a two-run home run to right centerfield to bring the score to 6-2. However,
the Bears would get no closer as Fairmont State scored once in the fifth and
three times in the seventh for the final 10-2 score.
The Fighting Falcons were led by Kristy Rausch (Mason, Ohio) and Sarah
Zeleznikar (Burton, Ohio), who each went two-for-four with two runs scored.
Rausch added a two-run home run and two RBI, accounting for both runs in the
second inning.
Katie Burgess (Ravenswood, W.Va.) picked up the win for Fairmont State while
L-R senior Meredith O’Connor (Charlotte, N.C./Appalachian State Univ.)
(12-5) was credited with the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne will next take the field against Lincoln Memorial on Saturday in
the Bears’ 2008 South Atlantic Conference opener. The doubleheader is scheduled
for 1:00 p.m.
