No. 19 Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Mars Hill, 3-0,
In South Atlantic Conference Play
Bears improve to 12-2 on the season
Hickory, N.C. – The No. 19 Lenoir-Rhyne College Men’s Soccer Team
(12-2, 2-2) shut out Mars Hill College (6-8-1, 0-5), 3-0, Wednesday afternoon in
a South Atlantic Conference match at Bears Field.
Three different players scored for L-R as the Bears tallied all three goals
in the second half.
L-R sophomore midfielder Matthew Lee (St. Simons Island, Ga./Glynn
Academy) opened the scoring just 15 seconds after halftime when he high kicked
the ball into the net right in front of the goal.
The Bears made it 2-0 in the 56th minute after junior midfielder Gary
Higgins (Paisley, SCOTLAND/St. Andrews Academy) scored on a penalty kick and
sophomore forward Robert Dough (Asheboro, N.C./Asheboro HS) rounded out
the scoring with a goal off a deflection at the 75:02 mark.
L-R junior goalkeeper Francisco Banuelos (Guadalajara, MEXICO/New York
Tech) stopped seven shots in picking up his fifth shutout of the season while
Mars Hill goalkeeper Sean Merfeld (Alpharetta, Ga.) suffered the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne next travels to Belmont, N.C., to face Belmont Abbey Friday at 3
p.m., while Mars Hill visits Alderson-Broaddus for a match Sunday at 2 p.m.
