South Atlantic Conference Play Saturday At Bears Field
Luis Carrizosa scores the lone goal for the Bears
Hickory, N.C. – The No. 8 Lincoln Memorial University Men’s Soccer Team
(11-2, 4-0 SAC) spoiled No. 18 Lenoir-Rhyne College’s (11-2, 1-2 SAC) attempt at
revenge after last season’s 5-3 penalty kick loss in the NCAA Division II
Appalachian Region Tournament finals. The Railsplitters picked up the 2-1 win at
Bears Field Saturday, handing L-R its second loss in three matches.
Leandro Pereira (Brasilia, BRAZIL) opened the scoring for LMU just 6:23 into
the match when split a pair of defenders and beat the goalkeeper for the score.
Felipe Nogueira (Uberaba, BRAZIL) made the score 2-0 in favor of the
Railsplitters with 18:16 to go before halftime when he headed in a corner kick
from Marcelo Galafassi (Jundiai, BRAZIL).
However, Lenoir-Rhyne gained some momentum going into the intermission when
junior forward Luis Carrizosa (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen HS)
received a cross from sophomore forward Amar Brkic (Winston-Salem,
N.C./R. J. Reynolds HS) and beat the goalkeeper with a shot that found the back
of the net with just 16 seconds remaining on the clock.
Both the Bears and the Railsplitters had several chances in the second half
to add more points to the board, but neither team could capitalize on their
opportunities.
Brent Cole (Knoxville, Tenn.) picked up the win in goal for LMU, while junior
Francisco Banuelos (Guadalajara, MEXICO/New York Tech) suffered the loss
for the Bears despite stopping six shots on the day.
Lenoir-Rhyne will return to action on Wednesday, when they host Mars Hill in
a SAC matchup at 4:00 p.m.
