Luis Velez is entering his first year as Lenoir-Rhyne’s Director of Strength & Conditioning, the first-ever to hold the position at the University.

Velez has been an athletic trainer, preceptor and adjunct instructor for Lenoir-Rhyne since the beginning of the 2005-06 academic year.

Velez’s strength and conditioning duties began last year with the Bears’ men’s basketball team and his influence helped guide the squad to the team’s first-ever NCAA Division II berth in the regional finals.

Velez, a 2001 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne with an undergraduate degree in sports medicine/athletic training, will be responsible for men's and women’s basketball during the 2016-17 academic year with regards to athletic training.

As athletic trainer, Velez has worked with numerous sports at Lenoir-Rhyne including men’s soccer for the past decade.

Velez came back to Lenoir-Rhyne after working as an Assistant Athletic Trainer for Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Fla. (2003-05).

Velez received his master's degree in health and exercise science from Furman University in May of 2003. At the Greenville, S.C., school, Velez served as a graduate assistant trainer (2001-03) and has been an Athletic Trainer for Doug Allison's Soccer Academy every summer since 2003.

He also directs a Speed and Conditioning Academy at Lenoir-Rhyne every summer (velezercise.com) along with assisting speed and conditioning programs for Lenoir-Rhyne's baseball and men's soccer teams.

Luis also serves as an instructor for the School of Health, Exercise Science and Sport Science in the College of Health Sciences. He teaches courses including First Air and Emergency Care, Weight Training and Upper Extremity Evaluation Lab. Velez is also a preceptor for graduate students in the Lenoir-Rhyne Athletic Training Education Program.

Velez is a Certified and Licensed Athletic Trainer and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist as well as a First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor belonging to the National Athletic Trainers' Association and National Strength and Conditioning Association.
