Lenoir-Rhyne Football Sets 2008 Schedule
The Bears’ 2008 slate includes six homes
Hickory, N.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne College and Head Football Coach Fred
Goldsmith have officially announced the schedule for the 2008 season.
The schedule, which includes six homes games, will feature the first three
contests of the year at Moretz Stadium.
“I am real pleased with the way the schedule worked out,” said
Goldsmith. “I believe it is a fan-friendly schedule with six home games
and the furthest road trip being Carson-Newman (October 18). I am also glad that we
have the schedule intact for the next five years.”
L-R opens the year with a home date against West Virginia Tech on Saturday,
August 30, at 7 p.m. The Bears and the Golden Bears are meeting for the first
time since 1988 (a 24-7 Lenoir-Rhyne victory).
Lenoir-Rhyne follows with home dates against Concord (September 6)
and Davidson (September 13) on Family Weekend. Both games are slated for 7 p.m.
Lenoir-Rhyne is playing Concord for the first time since 2003 while its renewed
series with old-time rival Davidson is in its fifth straight year.
From there, Lenoir-Rhyne moves into South Atlantic Conference play with a
trip to Brevard, N.C., on September 27 with a 7 p.m., start time. The Tornados, a provisional
member of the SAC this season, will officially begin league play in 2008-09.
Lenoir-Rhyne defeated Brevard in the first-ever game between the two schools last
year, 23-12.
Several more home games highlight the schedule including Tusculum (October 4
at 2 p.m.) as part of Homecoming Weekend and the season finale against long-time
rival Catawba (November 8 at 7 p.m.). Catawba, the 2007 SAC Co-Champions,
finished 11-2 this year.
Lenoir-Rhyne also has several challenging road games including visits to
SAC-powers Carson-Newman (October 18 at 3 p.m.) and Newberry (November 1 at 7
p.m.) for the Bishops’ Trophy. Carson-Newman finished 10-1 in 2007 and tied
for the league title while Newberry finished 9-2.
Catawba (No. 12), Carson-Newman (No. 14) and Newberry (No. 20) all finished
ranked in the NCAA Division II National Final Poll.
