Hired in late 2006, Mike
Houston is beginning his
first season as Lenoir-Rhyne’s
Defensive Coordinator and
Secondary Coach.
Houston comes to L-R after
spending one year (2006) as
the Associate Head Coach and
Defensive Coordinator for
Brevard College, a program
which re-established
football after a 56-year
absence.
Brevard went 2-6 last year
as a team which comprised of
nearly all freshmen.
Houston was an integral part
of a program that recruited
nearly 100 players in a span
of seven months, serving as
recruiting coordinator for
Western North Carolina,
South Carolina and North
Georgia.
Prior to Brevard, Houston
served as the Head Coach at
T.C. Roberson High School in
Asheville, N.C., from
2001-05.
Under Houston, T.C. Roberson
went 42-18 (5-4 in the
playoffs) and was a two-time
Times-News Area Coach Of The
Year (2002-04).
Houston’s 2004 squad was his
best ever, going 13-1 on the
year.
Houston, who was a 2005
Shrine Bowl Assistant Coach,
spent five years as T.C.
Roberson’s Defensive
Coordinator (1996-00) before
taking over the head job.
Houston’s coaching career
started at Forbush High
School in East Bend, N.C.,
where he served as an
Assistant Coach for the
Football (1994-95) and Men’s
Basketball Teams (1994-96).
A 1994 graduate of Mars Hill
College with a bachelor’s
degree in biology, Houston
was a three-year
letterwinner (1991-93) on
the Lions’ squad as a
linebacker and a tight end.
Houston, a Franklin High
School (N.C.) graduate, is
married to the former Amanda
Owen.
