Carson-Newman Women’s Basketball Downs Lenoir-Rhyne, 72-65
Sophomore guard Amber Holt ties a season-high with 27 points despite the
loss for the Bears
Hickory, N.C. – The Carson-Newman College Women’s Basketball Team
(12-10, 6-4) defeated Lenoir-Rhyne College (11-11, 2-8), 72-65, in a South
Atlantic Conference game Wednesday evening at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium in
Hickory, N.C.
Carson-Newman, which swept the season series from Lenoir-Rhyne, held a 52-30
advantage on the boards and had four players score in double figures led by
Angela Volentine (North Platte, Neb.) with 18 points.
Sophomore guard Amber Holt (Charlotte, N.C./Hopewell HS) led all
scorers with a 27 points, tying a season-high, despite the loss for the Bears.
With the score tied at 59 with 2:12 remaining in the contest, the Lady Eagles
ran off six straight points for a 65-59 advantage over the next 90 seconds to
take control of the game.
Nikki James’ (Cookeville, Tenn.) lay-up with 1:51 left put Carson-Newman
ahead for good.
James finished with 10 points while Shari Buford (Hampton, Ga.) chipped in
with 11 points and Emily Mason (Rogersville, Ala.) tallied a double-double (12
points and a game-high 14 rebounds) in the Lady Eagles’ victory.
Carson-Newman was also aided by a 33-for-42 performance (79 percent) from the
free throw line and overcame 24 turnovers.
Sophomore guard Jami Safrit (Hickory, N.C./Fred T. Foard HS) also
scored in double figures for the Bears as she tallied 10 points to go along with
five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The contest also featured 13 ties.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which looks to snap a six-game losing streak in conference
play, travels to Harrogate, Tenn., to take on Lincoln Memorial Saturday at 6
p.m., while Carson-Newman returns home to face Tusculum on Saturday at 6 p.m. as
well.
