Newberry Women’s Basketball Outlasts Second Half Runs By
Lenoir-Rhyne, 83-76, In South Atlantic Conference Action
Sophomore Jami Safrit leads all scorers with 20 points
Hickory, N.C. – The Newberry College Women’s Basketball Team (16-6,
6-4) held off several second half Lenoir-Rhyne College (11-10, 2-7) runs to
come away with an 83-76 South Atlantic Conference victory at Shuford Memorial
Gymnasium Saturday night.
The game was a part of Basketball Alumni Weekend and was also host to
Lenoir-Rhyne’s annual Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund “Think Pink” Night.
Newberry, which saw five players reach double figures in scoring, was led
by Tacarra Harris (Tupelo, Miss.), with the game’s only double-double (14
points and 13 rebounds), and Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.), who added 17
points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
Up by a score of 39-28 at the break, the Indians saw their lead melt away
in the second half. The Bears were able to tie the game on five separate
occasions but could never gain the advantage.
L-R was led by sophomore guard Jami Safrit (Hickory, N.C./Fred T.
Foard HS) with a game-high 20 points while dishing out four assists. The Bears
also reaped double figures in scoring from sophomore guard Amber Holt
(Charlotte, N.C./Hopewell HS) and her high school teammate redshirt freshman
guard LaCourtney Rann, who scored 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Freshman forward Briana Stanton (Snow Hill, N.C./Greene Central HS)
came off the bench to score 13 points while leading the Bears with seven
rebounds.
Lenoir-Rhyne will next host Carson-Newman on Wednesday at Shuford Memorial
Gymnasium. The game is set for a 6:00 p.m. tip.
