Carson-Newman Baseball Sweeps Lenoir-Rhyne, 9-2 And 7-2
Bears drop to 21-27 on the season and 10-10 in league play
Jefferson City, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman College Baseball Team
(35-14, 13-6) swept Lenoir-Rhyne College (21-27, 10-10), 9-2 and 7-2, in a South
Atlantic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Silver Diamond
Baseball Complex in Jefferson City, Tenn.
Game One – Carson-Newman 9, Lenoir-Rhyne 2
Carson-Newman's Brett Hontz (Newton Square, Pa.) improved to 9-1 on the season
after pitching his fifth complete game of the year. Hontz allowed just two runs
on six hits while striking out eight batters in leading the Eagles to the win.
Carson-Newman opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the third
inning with the help of two Lenoir-Rhyne errors.
The Eagles then put the game away with two runs in each of the fourth, fifth
and six innings.
Carson-Newman was led offensively by Cory McGinnis (Morristown, Tenn.), who
finished three-for-four with three runs scored, two doubles and one run batted
in.
For Lenoir-Rhyne, freshman shortstop Hunter Glass (Matthews,
N.C./David W. Butler HS) hit a solo home run in the eighth inning while junior
first baseman Zachary Glass (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury HS) added an RBI
double in the ninth frame.
L-R sophomore Chris Henderson (Lincolnton, N.C./West Lincoln HS) fell
to 4-5 with the loss.

Game Two – Carson-Newman 7, Lenoir-Rhyne 2
The Eagles took control in the second contest with a five-run second inning to
lead 6-0 en route to the win.
Jason Gray (Rutledge, Tenn.) highlighted the second frame with a
bases-clearing triple.
The Bears cut the margin to 6-2 in the top of the sixth inning that included
an RBI double by sophomore outfielder Evan Taylor (Charlotte,
N.C./Independence HS) but the Eagles responded in their half of the sixth on a
run-scoring double by McGinnis.
Gray finished three-for-three with three RBI and Wesley Dozier (Cornelius,
N.C.) added two runs batted in to pace Carson-Newman offensively while the
Eagles' Corbin Arial (Elgin, S.C.) improved to 3-3 on the year with the victory.
L-R sophomore Adam Hart (Jacksonville, N.C./White Oak HS) was tagged
with the loss and fell to 0-4 on the season.
