Newberry Baseball Takes Two From Lenoir-Rhyne, 9-1 And 4-3

Bears fall to 21-24 on the season and 10-8 in the South Atlantic Conference

Newberry, S.C. – The Newberry College Baseball Team (17-23, 7-11) swept a doubleheader from Lenoir-Rhyne College (21-24, 10-8), 9-1 and 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Smith Road Complex in Newberry, S.C.

Game One – Newberry 9, Lenoir-Rhyne 1
Newberry’s Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.) and David Tunstill (Melbourne, Fla.) drove in three runs each and Chris Bremer (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) (3-3) allowed just one unearned run in going the distance in the Indian win.

Newberry jumped ahead 7-0 after just two innings and never looked back. Tunstill, who went three-for-three with two runs scored as well, drove in a run in each frame while Newberry scored four unearned runs in the second inning thanks to a pair of Bear errors.

Lenoir-Rhyne freshman Brandon Padgett (Hickory, N.C./Western Carolina Univ.) fell to 3-4 with the loss.

Game Two – Newberry 4, Lenoir-Rhyne 3
Newberry jumped out to a 4-0 lead, highlighted by a two-run hit from Tunstill in the third inning, and were able to hold off a late L-R rally for the win.

L-R sophomore outfielder Evan Taylor (Charlotte, N.C./Independence HS) cut the margin to 4-2 with a two-run single in the top of the sixth inning although Newberry was able to get out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam.

Bear senior outfielder J.D. Harrison (Winter Haven, Fla./Polk CC) tallied a run-scoring single in the seventh inning to pull within one at 4-3 but the Indians were able to end the game with runners at first and second.

Tunstill tallied three runs batted in for the contest and finished with six RBI for the day.

Newberry’s Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) improved to 3-5 with the victory while Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Justin Crowell (New London, N.C./North Stanly HS) suffered the loss and fell to 2-5 on the year.

Lenoir-Rhyne remains on the road when it travels to Gaffney, S.C., to face Limestone Wednesday beginning at 3:00 p.m.
