Atlantic Conference Action
Sophomore Chris Henderson goes the distance on the mound for the Bears in
the win
Newberry, S.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne College Baseball Team (21-22, 10-6)
defeated Newberry College (15-23, 5-10), 5-3, Friday evening in South Atlantic
Conference action at Smith Road Complex in Newberry, S.C.
L-R sophomore Chris Henderson (Lincolnton, N.C./West Lincoln HS)
pitched a complete game for the Bears en route to the win. Henderson allowed
just one earned run while striking out seven batters in improving to 4-4 on the
season.
Down 2-0, the Bears tied it in the seventh inning on RBI hits from redshirt
freshman catcher Brian Dice (Hickory, N.C./Western Carolina Univ.) and
freshman outfielder Stephen Andrews (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mt. Tabor HS).
After Newberry went ahead 3-2, L-R took the lead for good on a two-run home run
by junior third baseman Daniel Ford (Youngstown, Ohio/Manatee CC) in the
top of the eighth. The
home run was Ford’s team-leading 10th of the season.
Andrews, who finished with two runs batted in, added a run-scoring hit in the
ninth inning for the Bears.
Nick Martin (Morehead City, N.C.) led Newberry with two RBI.
The Indians' Brandon Petty (Melbourne, Fla.) fell to 4-7 with the defeat.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday
beginning at 1 p.m.
