Hickory, N.C. - The seventh-ranked Mount Olive College Baseball Team (1-0) scored 15 runs in the final two innings to roar past Lenoir-Rhyne University (0-3), 19-9, Saturday afternoon at Bears Field.
Trailing 5-4 after seven innings of play, the Trojans scored five runs in the eighth fame before plating 10 in the ninth to prevail in its 2011 season opener.
Mount Olive's Michael Knox (Cary, N.C.) finished with three hits and three runs batted in to go along with a solo home run to lead the Trojans.
L-R senior catcher Brian Dice (Hickory, N.C.) connected on two solo home runs and finished four-for-four while freshman outfielder Mike Gasque (Mebane, N.C.) added three hits and three RBI despite the loss.
A run-scoring single by Gasque gave the Bears a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh but the Trojans took the lead for good with a five-run eighth frame highlighted by Ryan Faison's (Oldsmar, Fla.) game-winning RBI single.
A two-run single by L-R senior first baseman Anthony Sully (Charlotte, N.C.) in the eighth inning helped the Bears cut the margin to 9-8 but the Trojans responded with a 10-run ninth.
For Mount Olive, Daniel Coffey (Granite Falls, N.C.) and Dan Hayduk (Browns Mills, N.J.) added two hits and three runs batted in each while David Combs (Mount Olive, N.C.) picked up the win on the mound.
Sophomore Alex Askey (Charlotte, N.C.) fell to 0-1 on the year after taking the loss for the Bears.
