Newberry, S.C. - The Newberry College Football Team (5-4, 4-2) claimed its third straight Bishops Trophy and kept its hopes alive for a South Atlantic Conference Title with a 38-14 win over Lenoir-Rhyne University (3-7, 1-5) Saturday night at Setzler Field in Newberry, S.C.
Newberry's Kelton Tindal (Sumter, S.C.) caught three passes for 130 yards to go along with two touchdowns (one receiving and one rushing) as the Scarlet and Gray racked up 452 yards of total offense in the win.
L-R scored on the game's opening drive when junior quarterback Justin Sanders (Monroe, N.C.) hit sophomore running back Andrew Courman (Beaufort, N.C.) for a 42-yard touchdown reception to cap a nine-play, 75-yard drive.
Newberry, however, quickly tied it on its first play from scrimmage when Eric McCollom (Camden, S.C.) found Tindal for a 71-yard touchdown reception.
The score was the first of four straight touchdowns for Newberry, who took a commanding 28-7 lead into the break.
A one-yard sneak by McCollom on Newberry's next drive put the home team on top for good and culminated a nine-play, 91-yard drive with 13 seconds left in the first stanza.
Tindal and Lyndon Ingram (Sumter, S.C.) scored from five and 18 yards out, respectively, in the second quarter for the three-touchdown halftime advantage.
In the third quarter, Newberry extended its advantage to 38-7 when Timmy Boyd (Clover, S.C.) finished off an 11-play, 92-yard drive with a 12-yard run.
Lenoir-Rhyne scored its second touchdown of the game when redshirt freshman running back Byron Darby (Gastonia, N.C.) hit daylight from 45 yards out with 8:36 remaining. Darby finished with a game-high 101 yards rushing to lead the Bears.
For Newberry, McCollom tallied 201 yards passing while Devon Smalls (Hollywood, S.C.) added six tackles and one interception.
Sanders finished with 135 yards passing and the team rushed for 175 yards despite the loss for the Bears.
Sophomore linebacker Chad Holby (Fairview, N.C.) tallied a team-high nine tackles on defense for the Bears.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to face Catawba next Saturday beginning at 7 p.m., in its regular season finale while Newberry faces Brevard in Brevard, N.C., on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
