Greeneville, Tenn. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Baseball Team (5-22) put an end to its five-game losing streak with a 10-2 victory over Tusculum College (19-6) Wednesday afternoon at Pioneer Park. The contest was a non-conference regional affair.
Clinging to a 1-0 lead, the Bears broke the game open with seven runs in the top of the fifth inning. Senior catcher Brian Dice (Hickory, N.C.) highlighted the frame for the Bears with a two-run single.
L-R closed out the scoring with two runs in the top of the ninth inning on a two-run single by freshman infielder Walton Shepherd (Lake Junaluska, N.C.).
Dice led the Bears with three hits and two runs batted in while junior outfielder Stephan Arcieri (Roswell, Ga.) added three hits as Lenoir-Rhyne pounded out 15 hits en route to the win.
Shepherd and sophomore designated hitter Colton Hansley (Asheville, N.C.) each drove in two runs as well for the Bears.
L-R sophomore Cole Erxleben (Franklin, N.C.) earned the victory on the mound after limiting Tusculum to one run in five and one-third innings pitched. Erxleben improved to 1-1 on the season while Tusculum's Kyle Smith (St. Petersburg, Fla.) fell to 2-1 after suffering the loss.
Sean Cotten (Mooresville, N.C.) drove in both runs for the Pioneers, who saw their four-game winning streak snapped.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference play this weekend when it travels to Jefferson City, Tenn., to face Carson-Newman for a series with the Eagles. The first game begins at 3:00 p.m., on Friday.
