Anderson Holds Off Lenoir-Rhyne, 69-61, In Men's Basketball

Bears suffer their 11th straight defeat
Junior forward Jeff Thomas led Lenoir-Rhyne with a team-high 18 points despite a 69-61 setback to Anderson in a league contest at home Wednesday night.
Hickory, N.C. - The Anderson University Men's Basketball Team (14-7, 8-3) remained in sole possession of second place in the South Atlantic Conference with a 69-61 win over Lenoir-Rhyne University (2-17, 1-10) Wednesday night at Shuford Gymnasium.
Anderson's Taylor Shugart (Rock Hill, S.C.) finished with a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds while hitting 11-of-14 shots as the Trojans won their third straight contest and swept the season series from the Bears.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which suffered its 11th consecutive defeat, was led by junior forward Jeff Thomas' (Chapel Hill, N.C.) 18 points despite the setback.
Anderson built its largest lead of the game when it entered halftime with a 37-24 advantage but L-R cut the deficit to five (46-41) on a trey by Thomas with 11:40 remaining.
The Trojans maintained the advantage throughout the rest of the contest as it would lead by at least five points the rest of the way.
Anderson's Tyrell McDowell (Miami, Fla.) added 12 points and hit four three-pointers and Trey Britton (Alpharetta, Ga.) chipped in with 10 for the Trojans in the victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Newberry, S.C., to take on Newberry on Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. Anderson returns home to play Mars Hill Saturday at 4 p.m.
