Hickory, N.C. - The Carson-Newman College Men's Basketball Team (6-8, 3-3) held on at the very end to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne University (2-12, 1-5), 60-58, Monday afternoon at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium in a South Atlantic Conference game.
The Eagles' Antonio Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) finished with a team-high 18 points and hit five three-pointers while Joe Meady (Strawberry Plains, Tenn.) came off the bench to tally 12 points en route to the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne freshman forward Allan Jones (Clemmons, N.C.) notched his third straight double-double (a career-tying 23 points and 12 rebounds) while freshman guard Bryce Hawkins (Charlotte, N.C.) added 10 points and 10 rebounds but the Bears suffered their sixth straight loss.
A three-pointer by Sullivan gave Carson-Newman its largest lead of the game at 50-38 with 8:35 remaining before Lenoir-Rhyne slowly began closing the gap.
Freshman guard R.J. McClure (Canton, N.C.) finished off a 7-0 run with a trey that cut the margin to 55-53 with 1:41 left and the Bears had a chance to tie with 0.7 seconds on the clock but just did not have enough time to get a good shot off from under its basket.
Junior forward Jeff Thomas (Chapel Hill, N.C.) added 10 points for the Bears, who shot 38 percent for the game (23-for-60) and hit just 19 percent (three-of-16) from behind the three-point line.
Lenoir-Rhyne next hosts long-time rival Catawba while Carson-Newman pays a visit to Mars Hill for a conference contest. Both games are scheduled for Wednesday beginning at 8 p.m.
