Wingate, N.C. - The Wingate University Men's Basketball Team (8-5, 3-2) downed Lenoir-Rhyne University (2-10, 1-3), 66-58, in South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday afternoon at Cuddy Arena.

The Bulldogs' Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points while Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) added 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists to lead Wingate to the win.

Lenoir-Rhyne freshman forward Allan Jones (Clemmons, N.C.) finished with a double-double, 16 points and 10 rebounds, but the Bears suffered their fourth straight defeat.

After entering halftime tied at 28, Wingate scored the first six points of the second half and held the lead the rest of the way.

Matilus gave the Bulldogs their biggest advantage of the contest at 54-45 with a field goal with 5:37 left before the Bears cut the margin to three (54-51) on back-to-back three-pointers by freshman guard Bryce Hawkins (Charlotte, N.C.) but couldn't get any closer the rest of the way.

Hawkins finished with 14 points and hit four treys in the second half to help keep the Bears in the game.

Wingate's Quan Alexander (Charlotte, N.C.) added 12 points including five in the final 50 seconds while both teams had four players score in double figures.

Juniorguard Kevin Davis (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior forward Jeff Thomas (Chapel Hill, N.C.) chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Bears, who shot just 38 percent (20-of-53) for the contest.

L-R next plays Brevard in a South Atlantic Conference contest Saturday at 4:00 p.m., on the road while Wingate visits Mars Hill for a league game Saturday beginning at 4:00 p.m., as well.
