Mount Olive, N.C. - The No. 25 Mount Olive College Men's Basketball Team (1-0) opened the 2010-11 season with a 63-59 win over Lenoir-Rhyne University (0-1) Monday evening at Kornegay Arena.
Mount Olive's Mahamad Ibrahim (Annandale, Va.) scored 11 of his team-high 15 points in the second half including two free throws with 2.6 seconds left to seal the win for the Trojans.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior forward D.J. Blackmon (Albemarle, N.C.) led all scorers with 27 points despite the loss. Junior guard Jon Hathcock (Concord, N.C.) and freshman guard Allan Jones (Clemmons, N.C.) added nine and eight points, respectively, in the loss for the Bears.
Lenoir-Rhyne cut a 12-point Mount Olive lead (54-42) in the second half to two at 61-59 with 29 seconds left and had chance to tie but missed a field goal while Ibrahim pulled down the rebound and the Trojans held on for the win.
Brandon Allen (Woodbridge, Va.) added a team-high 15 points, all in the first half, while Kason Cheeks (Wilson, N.C.) tallied 11 points and nine rebounds for the Trojans in the win.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to face Limestone Friday at 7 p.m., in the second game of the 2010 South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Tip-Off Classic. Queens and Wingate will first play at 5 p.m. Mount Olive hosts North Georgia in the 45th annual Pickle Classic Friday at 7:30 p.m.
On the second day of the doubleheader Saturday, Lenoir-Rhyne will take on Queens at 7 p.m., after Wingate and Limestone play in the first contest beginning at 5 p.m.
