Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne University Baseball Team (2-7) rallied from an eight-run, first-inning deficit to defeat Limestone College (2-7), 17-9, Tuesday afternoon at Bears Field. L-R senior outfielder Evan Taylor (Charlotte, N.C.) hit a three-run home run and finished with four runs batted in to lead the Bears to their second straight win.
Limestone jumped out to an 8-0 first-inning advantage thanks to a two-run home run from Joe Maloney (Aston, Pa.) and a bases-clearing double by Michael Hughey (Gaffney, S.C.).
L-R started its rally with three runs in its half of the first and second innings. Junior outfielder Stephen Andrews (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and senior catcher Rob Knight (Sterling Heights, Mich.) each connected on two-run hits in the first and second frames, respectively, as the Bears cut the lead to 9-6.
An RBI single by junior outfielder Chris LaVenia (Clearwater, Fla.) broke a nine-all tie and proved to the game-winner in L-R’s four-run fourth inning.
The Bears extended the lead by plating four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it 14-9, highlighted by Taylor’s three-run home run, then closed out the contest with three more runs in the eighth including Knight’s two-run single.
Knight also finished with four runs batted in to go along with three hits while freshman Jared Carroll (Bladenboro, N.C.) (1-0) picked up the win after limiting Limestone to just one run in six and one-third innings pitched for the Bears.
Limestone’s Clint Medlin (Clover, S.C.) fell to 0-1 with the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne next hosts Seton Hill (11:00 a.m.) and Bloomsburg (2:00 p.m.) on Saturday.
