Wingate, N.C. – The Wingate University Men’s Basketball Team (11-8, 4-4) defeated Lenoir-Rhyne University (3-15, 1-7), 70-60, Wednesday evening in South Atlantic Conference action at Cuddy Arena.

Wingate’s Jaime Vaughn (Tallahassee, Fla.) finished with a game-high 22 points including six three-pointers while Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) added 16 points as the Bulldogs handed the Bears their seventh straight defeat.

Vaughn hit five treys in the second half and Wingate finished with nine three-pointers total en route to the win.

Lenoir-Rhyne junior forward D.J. Blackmon (Albemarle, N.C.) tallied 22 points and eight rebounds, both game-highs, despite the setback.  Blackmon was the lone L-R player to score in double figures.  Bear sophomore forward Jeff Thomas (Durham, N.C.) added nine points in the losing effort.

With the Bulldogs clinging to a 49-45 lead with 12:29 remaining in the game, Vaughn scored all 10 points including three treys and a four-point play in a 10-4 run over the next three minutes to give Wingate a 10-point advantage (59-49).

L-R wouldn’t get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Greeneville, Tenn., to take on Tusculum Saturday in the final contest of a three-game South Atlantic Conference road trip beginning at 4 p.m.   Wingate visits Lincoln Memorial on Saturday at 4 p.m., in Harrogate, Tenn., in a league game.
