Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Baseball Program has recently completed construction of a new hitting complex at Bears Field, just in time for the start of the 2010 season.

The new complex boasts more than 2,800 square feet of floor space carpeted with new astroTurf.  Construction of the covered facility includes the addition of new cardinal metal roofing with skylights to completely cover the entire facility.  Players will now be able to take advantage of this facility while being protected from any inclement weather conditions.

Also included was the purchase of three new hitting nets, two 70 foot tunnel nets which can be divided for short drill work and one 30-foot net with built-in pockets for additional drill work.

This is as good as it gets,” said Head Coach Paul Knight. “We’re out of the weather, all the nets are brand new and we can have six hitters working at the same time. We couldn’t ask for anything better.

This is a huge improvement for our baseball program.” Knight pointed out.  “It has dramatically improved our ability to work efficiently and provides our players with a top-of-the line hitting facility.  I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to making this happen:  our players, parents, staff and alumni.”

The set up also allows the new nets to be closed down and provide open floor space where players can throw and pitchers can work off of indoor pitching mounds.  The addition of lights inside the facility is also in the planning process.

Lenoir-Rhyne Head Coach Paul Knight is in his third season at Lenoir-Rhyne.  Since his arrival, Bears Field has seen tremendous upgrades.  Prior to the completion of the new hitting facility, the facility has been upgraded with a new wood outfield wall, new full field warning track, laser graded infield, renovated backstop and a new full-field irrigation system.

Lenoir-Rhyne opens the 2010 season against Pfeiffer on Monday, February 1, at 2 p.m., in Misenheimer, N.C.  L-R first home game in Tuesday, February 2, versus Belmont Abbey beginning at 3 p.m.
