L-R Men's Basketball Opens The 2009-10 Season With A 74-69 Victory Over Mount Olive

Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men’s Basketball Team (1-0) opened the 2009-10 campaign with a 74-69 win over Mount Olive College (0-1) Monday evening at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium. Junior forward D.J. Blackmon (Albemarle, N.C.) and senior guard Marcus Hodges (Wake Forest, N.C.) combined for 39 points for the Bears in the season-opening victory.

Blackmon led all scorers with 21 points to go along with eight rebounds while Hodges (18 points) hit nine-of-10 free throw attempts in the decisive second half to lead L-R to the win.

Mount Olive preseason All-American Kendrick Easley (Norfolk, Va.) led the Trojans with 19 points while Mike Holloman (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 18 points despite the setback.

L-R, which led 36-35 at halftime, maintained the advantage throughout most of the second half but Mount Olive cut the margin to 67-64 on a three-pointer by Easley with 1:28 remaining.

From there, Hodges scored the final seven points on free throws to help L-R hold on for the win.

The Trojans had a chance to tie it at 72 but a three-point attempt by Lamonte’ Theus (Portsmouth, Va.) rimmed out with six seconds left before Hodges closed out the scoring with two points from the charity stripe.

Lenoir-Rhyne next travels to Charlotte, N.C., to face Limestone in the South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m. Queens is the host institution. The Bears will face the Royals on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
