Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Cross Country Wins Its Second Straight South Atlantic Conference Title

The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Cross Country Team won the 2009 Food Lion SAC Championship and finished first in the league for the second straight year.

Newton, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Cross Country Team won its second consecutive South Atlantic Conference Title with its first-place finish at the 2009 Food Lion SAC Championships Saturday morning at Southside Park.

L-R sophomore Kate Griewisch (Banner Elk, N.C.) was first overall after running an 18:27 on the 5K course and winning by one minute and 48 seconds.

The Bear women were fueled by three runners finishing in the top six.  In addition to Griewisch, sophomore Tiffany Payne (Painted Post, N.Y.) and senior Alyssa Lowe (Maiden, N.C.) placed fifth and sixth overall with times of 20:38 and 20:44, respectively.  All three runners earned All-SAC First-Team honors.

Freshman Elizabeth Chaffee (Winston-Salem, N.C.) earned second-team all-league honors after placing 10th overall with a 21:08 for the Bears.

On the men’s side, Lenoir-Rhyne finished second and was led by junior Tyler Mooney’s (Reidsville, N.C.) fifth-place finish.  Mooney ran a 26:50 over 8K and earned First-Team All-SAC accolades.

Sophomore Jakob Maidens (Lebanon, Va.) and freshman Patrick Ryan (Fort Myers, Fla.) were named to the all-conference second team after placing ninth and 13th overall, respectively.  Maidens ran a 27:15 while Ryan finished with a 27:39.

Mars Hill, with three of the top four runners in the race, won its 13th straight SAC Men’s Cross Country Championship while Tusculum’s Simon Holzapfel finished first with a 25:53 and claimed the individual title.

In addition, L-R’s Jason Stewart was named the South Atlantic Conference Women’s Cross Country Coach Of The Year while Griewisch was chosen as the 2009 SAC Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Of The Year.

Finally, Chaffee, Ryan and Zack Queen (Gastonia, N.C.) garnered conference all-freshman team accolades.

Lenoir-Rhyne next competes in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship on Saturday, November  7, 2009, in Wingate, N.C.  Wingate University will serve as the host school.
