Hickory, N.C. - The No. 14 Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Lacrosse Team (7-2, 4-0) remained in sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic Conference with a 17-10 win over Wingate (5-5, 1-4) Wednesday evening at Moretz Stadium.
L-R junior attacker Jay Goldsmith (Jamestown, N.C.) led all scorers with five goals as the Bears won their sixth straight match and prevailed in its regular season home finale.
This marks Goldsmith's second five-goal match of the season. Goldsmith also has a team-leading 20 goals on the year.
Wingate was led by Austin Murphy (Orillia, Ontario, CANADA) with three goals and three assists in the losing effort.
Lenoir-Rhyne held a 10-7 advantage early in the second half before putting the contest away by scoring the final four goals of the third period capped off by a score from freshman attacker Mike Hanlon (Haymarket, Va.).
Hanlon finished with three goals and two assists as well for the Bears, who held a 48-33 advantage in shots taken for the evening.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior goalkeeper Alex Squires (Lawrenceville, Ga.) earned the win after stopping eight shots while senior midfielder Sam Ashton (New Market, Md.) added two goals and two assists in the victory.
For Wingate, Tanner Kotch (Butler, Pa.) also scored twice while Jacob Ormerod (Lake Mary, Fla.) suffered the loss in goal despite stopping 10 shots on the evening.
Lenoir-Rhyne faces Queens in a league showdown on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., in Charlotte, N.C., while Wingate returns home to host Shorter on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
