Hickory, N.C. - The PEF/Bears Club, the official fundraising arm for Lenoir-Rhyne Athletics, hosted the 2012 Board Of Trustees Dinner on Tuesday, August 7, at the Lake Hickory Country Club.

The annual dinner and auction highlights the Bears' accomplishments of the past school year and helps usher in a new season for all 20 of L-R's athletic teams.

The dinner was kicked off by keynote speaker Jim Beatty, the world's first indoor sub-four-minute miler.

Beatty, a member of the United States Olympic Team in 1960, was a career record holder of 22 national and seven world records.

The event was highlighted by the annual check to Lenoir-Rhyne.  This year, Piedmont Educational Foundation/Bears Club President Blair Cody presented a check for a record one million dollars to Dr. Wayne Powell, President of the College.

The PEF/Bears Club also honors its Dr. Rufus L. Moretz Scholar-Athletes Of The Year, given annually to the male and female Lenoir-Rhyne student-athletes with the highest grade point averages.

Junior Jarrick Brown (Raleigh, N.C.), a member of the men's basketball team, was named the male scholar-athlete of the year while Amanda Young garnered female scholar-athlete-of-the-year accolades.

Young is a junior from Claremont, N.C., and a member of the Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Tennis Team.

The Bears Club also raised $4,800 in its auction of tickets to a pair of Texas Men's Basketball games this year:  December 4 against Georgetown in New York, N.Y., and December 19 at home versus North Carolina.  All proceeds go towards the betterment of Lenoir-Rhyne's student-athletes.
