Vancouver, British Columbia - Former Lenoir-Rhyne men’s soccer player Aaron Wheeler was signed by the Vancouver Whitecaps FC of the United Soccer League (USL) on Saturday. 

Wheeler joins the Whitecaps Premier Development League (PDL) team, agreeing to a deal until the end of October, with an option for the 2010 season.  The 6-foot-4, 185-pound forward transferred from Lenoir-Rhyne to Towson University in Maryland in the spring of this year. 

Wheeler scored 13 goals to go along with two assists for the Bears as a junior in 2008.  A physical player with plenty of pace, Wheeler was a two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Atlantic Region First Team selection at L-R, as well as a three-time All-South Atlantic Conference First Team member.  Wheeler played as a midfielder and a defender for the bears during his freshman and sophomore seasons—he would more than double his offensive output at forward his junior year.  In his three seasons at Lenoir-Rhyne Wheeler played in 54 matches, scoring 25 goals and tallying six assists.

The 21-year old joins the Whitecaps after playing with the Reading Rage of the PDL.  There he earned PDL Most Valuable Player honors, as he led the league in scoring. Setting the pace for the rest of the PDL this season, Wheeler recorded a goal or an assist in 13 of 17 regular season and playoffs matches.  Wheeler finished the 2009 campaign with 18 goals and three assists en route to Reading’s first-ever regular season championship.
