L-R Captures Regional Honors In Women's Outdoor Track And Field

Kate Griewisch named the women's track athlete of the year while Jason Stewart earned women's head coach-of-the-year accolades for the Southeast Region

New Orleans, La. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Track and Field Team garnered several regional honors by the USTFCCCA for the 2012 outdoor season in NCAA Division II. USTFCCCA is the United States Track and Field & Cross Country Coaches Association.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior Kate Griewisch (Banner Elk, N.C.) was named the women's track athlete of the year for the Southeast Region for the second straight season.
Meanwhile, L-R’s Jason Stewart was named the women's region head coach of the year and Jon Sharp was selected as the women's region assistant coach of the year.
Griewisch broke three school records this outdoor season in the 1,500-meter (4:32), 5,000-meter (16:20) and 10,000-meter (33:44) runs.
Griewisch's 10K time is ranked third nationally and she will compete in both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs at the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships on May 24-26 in Pueblo, Colo.
The women’s 10,000-meter championship is scheduled for 10:10 p.m., on Thursday, May 24, while the women’s 5,000-meter finals is slated for Saturday, May 26, beginning at 8:05 p.m. All times are Mountain Daylight Time.
Griewisch is a five-time, three-sport All-American including three years in women's cross country (2009-11) and one in each indoor (2012) and outdoor (2011) track and field.
Stewart has been Lenoir-Rhyne's Head Track and Field Coach since the both the men's and women's programs were re-established in 2006.
Stewart has also been the Head Coach of L-R's Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams since 2001 and led the women's squad to the league championship in 2008 and 2009.
Sharp was a four-year letterwinner (2003-06) on the Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Cross Country Team and earned first-team all-conference and all-region honors as a senior in 2006. As a track athlete, Sharp still holds the school record in the men's 5,000-meter run (15:41).
Sharp has been an assistant for both the cross country and track and field teams at Lenoir-Rhyne for the past five seasons.
