Lenoir-Rhyne Wraps Up Southeast Regional Championship In Outdoor Track And Field

Bears break records in the women's 1,500-meter run, women's 1,600-meter relay and men’s 400-meter relay

Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams put together several strong performances on the final day of the Southeast Regional Championship Saturday on the Irwin Belk Track at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.

In the team standings, both the men (57 points) and women (50 points) placed sixth overall for the Bears.

Meanwhile, Mars Hill won the men's competition with 154 points while Wingate (178) prevailed on the women's side.

Lenoir-Rhyne senior All-American Kate Griewisch (Banner Elk, N.C.) won the women's 1,500-meter run with a school-record 4:32.76 while the women's 1,600-meter relay team broke a school record with a 4:21.29 and finished fifth overall.

The squad consisted of freshmen AnQuinette Crawford (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Alyson Brenner (Lexington, N.C.), junior Elizabeth Chaffee (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and sophomore Kate Coleman (Spring Arbor, Mich.).

In the women's 5,000-meter run, sophomore Ashley Kale (Maiden, N.C.) placed sixth overall with a 20:06.32 while Coleman was fourth in the women's 400-meter dash (1:04.16) and Crawford was sixth in the 200-meter dash (27.66).

On the men's side, freshman Jarrod Spears (Bunnlevel, N.C.) finished third in the 100-meter dash (10.99) and freshman Daryel Morris (Rome, Ga.) placed fifth overall in the 400-meter dash (49.62).

In the middle distance events for the Lenoir-Rhyne men, senior Jakob Maidens (Lebanon, Va.) was sixth in the 800-meter run (1:59.26) and sophomore Aaron Nelson (Mayodan, N.C.) placed seventh in the 1,500-meter run (4:07.38).

Finally, the L-R men were third in the 400-meter relay (a school-record 41:65) and fifth in the 1,600-meter relay (3:24.06) events.  The Bears' 400-meter relay squad consisted of Spears, senior James Pone (Wilson, N.C.), junior Artis Gilmore (Asheville, N.C.) and senior Richard Walker (Loganville, Ga.).

Griewisch will run in the prestigious Penn Relays for the third straight year next Thursday at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa.  Griewisch will be competing in the women's 5,000-meter run.
