Winston-Salem State Baseball Wins Twice Over L-R, 13-9 And 9-8

Bears fall to 12-33 after losing twice in their home finale on the season

Hickory, N.C. - The Winston-Salem State Baseball Team (29-16) swept a doubleheader from Lenoir-Rhyne (12-33), 13-9 and 9-8, Tuesday afternoon at Bears Field.  The nightcap was extended to eight innings as the Rams prevailed.

Game One - Winston-Salem State 13, Lenoir-Rhyne 9 (seven innings)
Trailing 6-3, the Rams took control with an eight-run fifth inning to win the first game of the doubleheader.

In the frame, Aaron Jones (Kernersville, N.C.) connected on a bases-clearing triple for Winston-Salem State.  Jones finished with three hits and a game-high four runs batted in.

The Bears cut the lead to 11-9 when sophomore second baseman Mike Gasque (Mebane, N.C.) hit a three-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning but Lenoir-Rhyne couldn't get any closer.

For Winston-Salem State, Paco Martin (San Pedro De Macoris, Dominican Republican) totaled three hits and two RBI and Wesley Edwards (Rochester, N.Y.) (3-3) was credited with the victory on the mound.

L-R senior outfielder Stephan Arcieri (Roswell, Ga.) added a bases-clearing triple as well but junior Clay Tresher (Matthews, N.C.) fell to 0-2 with the loss.

Game Two - Winston-Salem State 9, Lenoir-Rhyne 8 (eight innings)
The Rams' Brandon Harrison (Kernersville, N.C.) broke an eight-all tie with the game-winning RBI single with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to lead Winston-Salem State to the doubleheader sweep.

Lenoir-Rhyne lost despite home runs from junior first baseman Colton Hansley (Asheville, N.C.), junior outfielder Rai Robinson (Kings Mountain, N.C.) and sophomore third baseman Walton Shepherd (Lake Junaluska, N.C.).

Winston-Salem State tied the score at six thanks to a two-run double from Martin in the top of the fourth inning.  The two squads traded single runs in the fifth and seventh innings before the Rams won the contest in the eighth frame.

Harrison led the way for the Rams with four hits and three runs batted in while Sheldon Johnson (Northwoodbury, N.J.) was credited with the win and improved to 3-4 on the year.

For Lenoir-Rhyne, Gasque tallied three hits and Hansley drove in three runs but senior Blake Edmonson (Newton, N.C.) fell to 0-4 with the setback.

Lenoir-Rhyne plays Belmont Abbey in Belmont, N.C., on Wednesday beginning at 3:00 p.m.  Winston-Salem State is at Lincoln (Pa.) for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
