Lenoir-Rhyne And Mars Hill Split Conference Doubleheader In Baseball

Lions win the first game by a 6-5 score before the Bears prevail in the nightcap, 6-2

Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team (12-31, 8-16) split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Mars Hill (16-28, 8-16) on Saturday at Bears Field.  Mars Hill held on to win the first contest, 6-5, before L-R salvaged the split with a 6-2 victory in the second game.

The Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead and escaped with the victory in the first contest.

Trailing 6-3, the Bears scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning but the Lions were able to register the final out with two runners on base.

Mars Hill opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the second inning highlighted by a two-run double from Michael Bueker (Cooper City, Fla.).

The Lions' Tyler Reboulet (Fishers, Ind.) drove in single runs in the seventh and ninth innings to push Mars Hill's advantage to 6-3 before L-R's two-run ninth inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, freshman outfielder Logan Senelis-Jose (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) connected on an RBI single but Mars Hill's Thomas Timmerman (Aiken, S.C.) got the final out for his first save of the year.

The Lions' Andy Runion (Prince George, Va.) (2-3) pitched eight innings for the victory while Bear junior Jared Carroll (Bladenboro, N.C.) fell to 4-4 with the loss.

L-R sophomore second baseman Mike Gasque (Mebane, N.C.) and sophomore catcher Ryan Swartz (Richmond, Va.) each tallied two hits despite the loss.

Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 6, Mars Hill 2 (seven innings)
L-R sophomore Ryan Jones (Asheville, N.C.) allowed just one earned run in six innings of work while improving to 3-3 on the season and junior outfielder Rai Robinson (Kings Mountain, N.C.) added two hits and drove in a game-high three runs in the victory.

Lenoir-Rhyne, holding a 2-1 lead, broke the contest open with a four-run fourth inning thanks to two-run singles from senior outfielder Stephan Arcieri (Roswell, Ga.) and Robinson.

For Mars Hill, Zach Honeycutt (Locust, N.C.) tallied a pair of hits and drove in a run but Josh Dean (Nederland, Texas) suffered the loss on the mound.  Dean (4-5) went the distance and allowed just two earned runs in the contest.

Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Winston-Salem State in its home finale in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Bears Field beginning at 4:00 p.m.  Mars Hill hosts Belmont Abbey on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
