Hickory, N.C. - The Catawba College Men's Basketball Team (7-16, 4-11) pulled off a 66-60 upset over Lenoir-Rhyne University (12-12, 8-7) Wednesday night in a South Atlantic Conference contest at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
Catawba's Keon Moore (Colerain, N.C.), last year's league freshman of the year, finished with a team-high 24 points and the Indians held off a late Bears' rally en route to the win.
L-R senior forward D.J. Blackmon (Albemarle, N.C.) led all scorers with a season-high 25 points on nine-of-11 shooting and junior forward B.J. Beasley (Charlotte, N.C.) added 10 points in the loss.
Catawba built a 43-27 lead, its largest of the game, on a lay-up by Tyrece Little (Greenville, N.C.) with 16:29 left before Lenoir-Rhyne began to rally.
Lenoir-Rhyne's long comeback ended with Beasley hitting a lay-up with 34 seconds left to cut the margin to 63-60 but the Bears couldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
Moore sank three free throws in the final 19 seconds to secure the victory for Catawba, who rebounded from a home loss to Lenoir-Rhyne earlier in the regular season.
Catawba also connected on eight three-pointers on the night and held a 37-29 edge in rebounding in the victory as well.
Lenoir-Rhyne plays league-foe Brevard in Brevard, N.C., while Catawba next hosts Tusculum. Both conference contests are slated to tip-off at 4:00 p.m., on Saturday afternoon.
