L-R Men's Basketball Defeats Elizabeth City State, 67-61, For Its Third Straight Win

Five players scored in double figures for the Bears in the win

Aiken, S.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team (4-5) made it three victories in a row with a 67-61 win over Elizabeth City State (6-4) Saturday afternoon on the final day of the 2011 Southeastern Tool-Don Cheeks-Dr. John Riley USC Aiken Pre-Holiday Classic at the Convocation Center.
Sophomore forward Allan Jones (Clemmons, N.C.) was one of five players to score in double figures for the Bears as he finished with a team-high 14 points.
L-R sophomore guard R.J. McClure (Canton, N.C.) added 11 points and hit three treys while junior forward B.J. Beasley (Charlotte, N.C.) tallied 10 points and finished 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the win.
Elizabeth City State was led by Quintin Spady (Norfolk, Va.) with a game-high 17 points and five three-pointers while Glenn Patterson (Red Springs, N.C.) added 14 points for the Vikings in the setback.
Lenoir-Rhyne opened up a 29-14 lead on a pair of free throws by Beasley late in the first half before the Bears took a 31-22 advantage into intermission.
Elizabeth City State cut the deficit to one in the second half on two occasions and trailed 63-61 with just over a minute left before L-R rounded out the scoring with the game's final four points.
L-R freshman guard A.J. McKenzie (Gastonia, N.C.) hit a lay-up with 1:03 remaining before McClure connected with two from the charity stripe with 27 seconds left to make it a six-point final.
Senior forward D.J. Blackmon (Albemarle, N.C.) and freshman guard Denzel Dillingham (Hickory, N.C.) each scored 10 points as well for the Bears, who hit 21-of-25 free throw attempts in the contest and held a 40-26 advantage in rebounds.
For their efforts, Jones and Blackmon earned all-tournament honors for L-R while USC Aiken's Re'mon Nelson was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.
Lenoir-Rhyne next competes in the Bearcat Holiday Classic against Georgia Southwestern on Thursday, December 29, in Lander, S.C., beginning at 5:30 p.m. Elizabeth City State takes on Livingstone in a CIAA contest on Thursday, January 5, 2012, at 7:30 p.m., in Salisbury, N.C.
