Barton Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader From L-R, 4-1 And 15-5

Junior outfielder Stephan Arcieri finished with four hits and two runs batted in despite Lenoir-Rhyne's doubleheader setback to Barton Wednesday in Asheboro, N.C.

Asheboro, N.C. - The Barton College Baseball Team (6-11) swept a doubleheader from Lenoir-Rhyne University (3-17), 4-1 and 15-5, Wednesday afternoon at McCrary Park, home of the Asheboro Copperheads.

Game One - Barton 4, Lenoir-Rhyne 1 (seven innings)
The Bulldogs' Bentley Massey (Wilson, N.C.) limited the Bears to just one run over six innings pitched while striking out seven batters in improving to 2-2 on the season.

Jordan Smith (Longmont, Colo.) opened the scoring for Barton with a two-run home run in the third inning.

The Bulldogs extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth highlighted by Aaron Watkins' (Newport News, Va.) RBI double.

Senior first baseman Anthony Sully (Charlotte, N.C.) drove in Lenoir-Rhyne's lone run with a double in the top of the fifth inning.

Lenoir-Rhyne freshman Ryan Wiese (Charlotte, N.C.) fell to 0-2 on the year after suffering the loss.

Game Two - Barton 15, Lenoir-Rhyne 5 (seven innings)
Watkins hit a three-run home run as part of Barton's eight-run third inning to help break the game open for the Bulldogs en route to the sweep.

Trailing 12-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bears scored three times keyed by junior outfielder Stephan Arcieri's (Roswell, Ga.) two-run single to cut the margin to 12-4 but L-R couldn't get any closer.

Watkins finished with three hits and four runs batted in while Smith and Chris Rawlings (Charlotte, N.C.) each drove in three runs for Barton, who collected a season-high 16 hits in the win.

Arcieri drove in two while senior outfielder Stephen Andrews (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scored once and connected on two hits for the Bears.

Barton's Christian Oliver (Gordonsville, Va.) improved to 2-1 with the win while L-R sophomore Clay Tresher (Matthews, N.C.) (0-2) suffered the loss.

Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday when it hosts Brevard at Bears Field beginning at 6 p.m.  The two teams will then play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
